Germany lose Ballack for opener

Germany captain Michael Ballack has lost his battle to be fit for Friday's FIFA World Cup™ opener against Costa Rica, manager Jurgen Klinsmann said on Thursday. Ballack was forced to pull out of Wednesday's training with his calf injury still troubling him and Klinsmann said his star midfielder would not be available in Munich.

"It seems that Michael Ballack cannot play against Costa Rica," Klinsmann said at a press conference on Thursday.

"He only trained for 30 minutes on Wednesday and then had to pull out.

"We wanted Ballack on board as he is our captain and leader but it is important that he recovers.

"We want him to get back to full fitness so that he can be fit for the other games in the competition."

Werder Bremen midfielder Tim Borowski and Borussia Dortmund's Sebastian Kehl are thought to be the men in the frame to step in for Ballack against Costa Rica.

A world of difference: 1974-2006

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...diummunich.jpg
When you watch archive footage from the 1974 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany, it is sometimes difficult to believe your eyes. Has it really been only 32 years since Franz Beckenbauer could walk around undisturbed, only noticed by a handful of journalists?

Flashback
In 1974, the world economy was still reeling from the effects of the previous year's oil crisis. Europe's political landscape was dominated by the division of Germany into East and West and the FIFA World Cup host city of Leipzig was still firmly behind the Iron Curtain.

However, 'Little Paris', as it was dubbed in the 18th century when it became the centre of a classical literary movement, is now a symbol of the historic changes over the last three decades, with its revitalised Zentralstadion set to host five fixtures this summer.

High-tech stadiums ensure maximum comfort
Sixteen teams arrived in Germany in 1974 to compete for the world title, whereas 32 nations will be battling it out this year. Spectators will watch 64 games in 12 high-tech arenas, including nine completely new stadiums. In 2006, all of the venues will provide the ultimate in spectator comfort, far removed from the conditions fans had to endure back in 1974, when they stood on the terraces, often at the mercy of the elements.

"Compared with today, the 1974 tournament was like the stone age in terms of stadiums," said Organising Committee Vice-President Wolfgang Niersbach. OC President Franz Beckenbauer takes a similar view: "It's like night and day. Many of the games weren't even sold out."

While 1.7 million people watched the 38 games of the finals across nine venues in 1974, the figure this summer will be more than three million. In 1974, the public purse contributed the equivalent of Euro 120 million to the tournament, whereas 2006 will see around Euro five billion of public money invested in improvements in infrastructure.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...tionalteam.jpg
Number of teams
A total of 194 countries, the highest figure ever, set out on the long road to qualification on 6 September 2003, contesting an astounding 847 qualifying games. In 1974, 98 associations competed for only 14 qualifying berths. Back then, the world champions Brazil and hosts Germany qualified automatically, whereas this time Carlos Alberto Parreira's men had to come through South American qualification to secure their finals place.

Each of the 32 national sides receives Euro 4.5 million for participating in 2006. In total, FIFA will pay out around Euro 170 million in appearance fees and bonuses. The world champions can look forward to an award of Euro 16.5 million in addition to the FIFA World Cup Trophy. The 16 nations that took part in 1974 could only dream of such riches.

Horst R. Schmidt, General Secretary of the German Football Association and Senior Vice-President of the OC, was also involved in organising the 1974 tournament: "The organisation of the FIFA World Cup is now on a scale that was unimaginable in 1974."

Huge media event
The huge changes in the intervening period become even clearer when you consider the development in terms of the media. In 1974, 4,616 media representatives from 72 countries were accredited, while the figure will be well over 10,000 in 2006. Back then, match reports were still written up on typewriters or transcribed by telephone to the editorial team at home, whereas data is now electronically transmitted around the globe in a matter of seconds. In the early 1970s, colour TV transmission represented one of the few technological breakthroughs, while today's fans can now take in video highlights on the internet or their mobile phones.

Things have also changed somewhat for the supporters. At one time, fans were more likely to meet in someone's house or at the local pub to watch the games on TV. Nowadays, it is commonplace for thousands of them to meet in public spaces to see the action on giant screens.

However, there is one thing that has not changed, namely the immense pressure of expectation on the German team to clinch the trophy in front of their home fans

The curtain is ready to rise

Few encounters leave such an indelible mark on a FIFA World Cup™ as the Opening Match. After four long years, fans can finally see their sides rejoin the quest for football's Holy Grail, and the joy that this brings is invariably worth the wait.

Down through the long history of the competition, there have been opening matches of every description: from the unusual scenario of extra time in the Switzerland-Germany opener of 1938, to shock defeats for defending champions Argentina and France by Cameroon and Senegal in 1990 and 2002 respectively.
How could anyone forget that gravity-defying leap by Francois Omam-Biyik of the Indomitable Lions that left Diego Maradona and Co licking their wounds at Italia 90? Or the hair-rising sound of a packed Azteca Stadium roaring out the Mexican national anthem after the stadium’s sound system had failed in 1986? Even today when these images are replayed, they never fail to stir the senses.

At Germany 2006, the host nation will have the privilege of playing in the Opening Match, an honour that had been bestowed on the defending champions for the previous 36 years. On 9 June, the Mannschaft will be hoping to make a good first impression on their expectant public and give them the first of many great evenings during the competition.

Costa Rica, for their part, will be looking to take inspiration from the historic opening-day feats of previous underdogs and become the first team in the tournament's history to beat a host nation in the inaugural game of a FIFA World Cup.

So, the stage is set and the interminable wait is almost over. It is now time to celebrate and enjoy what should be a feast of football. After all, how often do you witness an event that draws an audience of billions? The road to the Final in Berlin is sure to be historic and unforgettable, and one nobody will not want to miss.

Long wait over for hosts Germany

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...3788269934.jpg
The waiting finally comes to an end at 18:00 CET on Friday, when hosts Germany run out in front of a 59,416 full house at the FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich to open the 18th FIFA World Cup™ against Costa Rica.

FIFAworldcup.com assesses the key personalities and facts in the build-up to a Group A match that is equally anticipated several thousand miles away in Costa Rica.

Colours for the game
Germany: white shirt, black shorts, white socks
Costa Rica: red shirt, blue shorts, red socks

The players
Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann had one or two surprises up his sleeve when he announced his squad for the FIFA World Cup. Kevin Kuranyi and Fabian Ernst of Schalke and Werder Bremen's Patrick Owomoyela all failed to make the cut, but uncapped Borussia Dortmund prodigy David Odonkor received a shock call-up. Not to be outdone, Costa Rica boss Alexandre Guimaraes provided a surprise of his own by declining to name Norway-based Roy Miller, a left-back with Bodo Glimt.

How they qualified
Germany qualified automatically for the 2006 FIFA World Cup as the host nation. Costa Rica finished third behind the USA and Mexico in the CONCACAF Zone, sealing a berth at the finals with five victories, a draw and four defeats in ten qualifying fixtures.

Previous meetings
The sides have never previously met at full international level, although they have twice crossed swords at FIFA U-20 World Championships. The Ticos won 2-1 on both occasions (Doha/Qatar 1995 and Lagos/Nigeria 1999).

Tournament history
The 1930 and 1950 finals aside, Germany have competed with distinction at every FIFA World Cup tournament, lifting the Trophy on three occasions (1954, 1974 and 1990). Costa Rica make a third visit to the event after appearances in 1990 and 2002. The Central Americans won plaudits for their unencumbered attacking flair and fine individual skills in both Italy and Korea/Japan.

Key contest
The outcome could well depend on the form of the teams' star strikers, Miroslav Klose and Paulo Wanchope. Few will forget the German centre-forward's explosive display in his team's opening match at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, as he contributed a hat-trick to a thumping 8-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. The Polish-born striker finished top scorer in the Bundesliga last term with 25 goals. However, Wanchope is no mean goal-getter himself, a record of 43 goals in 67 internationals making him the Ticos' all-time leading scorer. At 29, Wanchope has clocked up a decade in the national team, and experienced the European stage at Derby County, West Ham United, Manchester City and Malaga.

Coaches
Klinsmann took the Germany helm in the summer of 2004 after their debacle at UEFA EURO 2004 in Portugal. The California-based 41-year-old has earned praise for rebuilding the team around a crop of promising youngsters. The Germans have won 15, drawn seven and lost five in 27 matches under Klinsmann. Guimaraes is justifiably regarded as one of the most able coaches in Costa Rican footballing history. The Brazil-born tactician has twice plotted a course through FIFA World Cup qualifying for the diminutive Central American nation. As a player, he contested all four of Costa Rica's matches at their historic first finals appearance in 1990.

jerman vs costarica
