England seek winning start without Rooney
One of the most fancied teams in Germany, England will open their FIFA World Cup™ campaign against Group B rivals Paraguay on 10 June. Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men will start off as favourites at the FIFA World Cup Stadium Frankfurt but should not underestimate opponents aiming to advance to the knockout rounds for the third successive time.

The players
The general consensus is that Eriksson has a more talented and experienced squad at his disposal than in 2002. Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have developed into two of Europe’s finest attacking midfielders, ensuring a real goal threat from the centre of the pitch. Up front the in-form Peter Crouch offers a viable option alongside Michael Owen in Wayne Rooney's absence. As for Paraguay, they are also without a striker in Jose Cardozo and have had doubts over Roque Santa Cruz. Fortunately, coach Anibal Ruiz can also call on Nelson Valdez as well a solid rearguard which features excellent performers in goalkeeper Justo Villar and defenders Carlos Gamarra and Julio Cesar Caceres.
How they qualified
England qualified comfortably with eight wins from their ten matches, including home and away successes against Poland. Paraguay finished fourth in the South American standings, with a record of eight wins, four draws and six defeats from 18 games. Notable among their results was the 1-0 home win over Argentina which secured qualification.
Past meetings
The teams have met twice before and on both occasions England won comfortably. Goals from Gary Lineker (2) and Peter Beardsley secured a 3-0 win over the South Americans in the second round of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, while Owen was among the scorers as England enjoyed an even more handsome 4-0 friendly win in April 2002.
Tournament history
England’s FIFA World Cup history began in Brazil in 1950 and the high point to date came on home soil in 1966 when Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick won them the world crown against West Germany. Their best performance since then came in 1990 when they reached the semi-finals. Paraguay appeared at the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 but had to wait until their fourth finals in 1986 to advance beyond the first round. They repeated that feat in 1998 and 2002 but are still waiting to progress any further.
Key contest
This match brings together two teams renowned on their own continents for the strength of their aerial game. England boast a real threat through David Beckham’s set-pieces and centre-back John Terry and, if selected, the towering Crouch are men the South Americans should keep a particularly close eye on. At the other end, England’s defence must be equally vigilant with strikers Santa Cruz and Valdez both a danger.
The coaches
Germany 2006 marks Eriksson's farewell to the England job after five years and the 58-year-old is determined to go out on a high, declaring: “It is 40 years since we last won a big tournament, and it's time to do it now.” Traditionally cautious there is a sense the Swede is ready to make bold decisions, starting with his inclusion of the untried Walcott. Doubts over Rooney mean he may even reconsider his preferred 4-4-2 formation, but that is unlikely to happen in this first match. Paraguay’s Uruguayan coach Ruiz is also a 4-4-2 man but may choose a more cautious five-man midfield in Frankfurt. The 63-year-old was appointed on a temporary basis after the last FIFA World Cup but has held on to the reins and believes facing England is the perfect start as “it won’t allow us a moment’s overconfidence”.

Paraguay welcome Lopez into fold http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23.../386171141.jpg Genoa striker Dante Lopez was officially welcomed into Paraguay’s FIFA World Cup™ squad on Thursday as a replacement for the injured Jose Cardozo. The 35-year-old Cardozo was ruled out of the Guaraní's finals campaign on Tuesday because of a calf injury.
Lopez took part in Thursday’s training session before Anibal Maño Ruiz’s squad headed to Frankfurt in advance of Saturday’s Group B opener with England. The 23-year-old will have his work cut out in replacing Cardozo, a true Albirroja legend who represented his country at the last two FIFA World Cups.
Despite his relative youth, Lopez has already picked up a wealth of international experience, however. A member of the Paraguay side that took the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Football Tournament behind fellow South Americans Argentina, Lopez has played for clubs in Paraguay, Spain, Israel and now Italy.
Strong, skilful and blessed with a powerful strike with either foot, Lopez is a typical Paraguayan striker who enjoys a physical battle and rarely comes off second best in the air or on the ground.

Elephants stand in way of Argentina
The first round of games in Group C of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ gets under way at 21:00 CET on Saturday 10 June, with Argentina renewing their quest to regain the crown they last won 20 years ago. Facing them in front of a packed house in Hamburg will be debutants Côte d'Ivoire.

The players
Argentina coach Jose Pekerman has put his faith in the crop of players he nurtured during his time in charge of the national youth teams that included among others Juan Pablo Sorin, Esteban Cambiasso and Juan Roman Riquelme. In doing so Pekerman has cast aside seasoned campaigners such as Javier Zanetti, the most capped Argentine international still in action today. His counterpart on Saturday, Henri Michel, had no such surprises in store, however, the Frenchman remaining faithful to the players who took Côte d'Ivoire to Germany and then all the way to the final of the recent CAF African Cup of Nations. Not surprisingly Didier Drogba, the side's star striker, captain and talisman, is among them.
How they qualified
The Albiceleste confirmed their finals place back in June 2005 with a handsome 3-1 win over eternal rivals Brazil in Buenos Aires, some three games from the end of the qualifying tournament. The Elephants turned the form book on its head when they edged out Cameroon in Group 3 in Africa following a 3-1 win over Sudan on the final day of qualifying.
Previous meetings
The two sides have met just once before, in the 1992 King Fahd Cup, the precursor to the current FIFA Confederations Cup. On that occasion the South Americans, coached by Alfio Basile, ran out comfortable 4-0 winners with goals from Gabriel Batistuta (2), Ricardo Altamirano and Alberto Acosta.
Tournament history
This is Argentina's 14th appearance at the finals. The Albiceleste have won the title twice (1978 and 1986) and finished runners-up on two other occasions (1930 and 1990). In stark contrast, Germany 2006 represents the Africans' first ever appearance at the finals.
Key contest
Riquelme versus Drogba. Pekerman is pinning his hopes on the sublime talents of Riquelme, who has been handed the legendary No.10 shirt for the first time in his international career. The Villarreal midfielder is the Argentines' master schemer and has the ability to win games single-handedly with inch-perfect passes and wicked drives from distance. Lining up against him will be the iconic figure of Drogba, the Elephants' main striking threat and inspirational skipper. The Chelsea forward was the second highest scorer in the African qualifiers and will be hoping to use his power and goalscoring acumen to shepherd his side through the tournament.
Coaches
After forging his reputation with the country's youth sides, Pekerman stepped up a level in September 2004 when he replaced Marcelo Bielsa as Argentina coach despite a lack of full international experience. Tactically unpredictable, the 56-year-old imposed his authority in leaving out the likes of Zanetti and Walter Samuel from his final 23-man squad.
