Côte d'Ivoire nonetheless remained unbeaten against eventual qualifiers Tunisia, holding them to a draw in both home and away legs (1-1 and 2-2).
b. Côte d'Ivoire have achieved 6-0 victories no less than three times in their history, a record in world football statistics. The matches in question were against Mali (1985), Botswana (1992) and Niger (2000).

ARGENTINA 2-1 CÔTE D'IVOIRE
In a highly entertaining Group C game in Hamburg, two first half goals from Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola helped Argentina to a 2-1 win over Côte d'Ivoire in Hamburg on Saturday, 10 June 2006.
The Albiceleste took the lead in the 24th minute when Crespo scored a classic poacher’s goal. Henri Michel’s side failed to deal with a Juan Riquelme free-kick and the Chelsea striker was on hand to turn the loose ball home.
Argentina doubled their advantage fourteen minutes later when Riquelme picked out Saviola with a great pass and the striker produced a beautiful finish to steer the ball past Jean-Jacques Tizie.
Didier Drogba, Crespo’s team-mate at Chelsea, gave the Ivorians hope with a goal eight minutes from time, but the South Americans hung on to secure the three points.
In conclusion:
Argentina held on for a precious victory in a classic end-to-end encounter, but Côte d’Ivoire were desperately unlucky not to claim in a point in a frenetic finish.

a. Until 2003, Serbia & Montenegro played international football as Yugoslavia. They reached the semi-finals of the first ever World Cup in 1930. An early lead faded into memory as the eventual champions Uruguay crushed them 6-1.
b. In 1950, Yugoslavia were eliminated in the group round despite two wins. In 1958 they reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 1-0 to Germany. They took revenge on Germany in 1962 with a 1-0 defeat, but the Czechs proved too strong for them in the semi-final.
c. In 1974 Yugoslavia crashed out of the second round, in 1990 exited in the quarter-finals. 11 June: Netherlands are back
The third day of Germany 2006 offers something for everyone, with three more European sides making their much-anticipated entrances (Portugal, Serbia and Montenegro, and Netherlands), along with Asian side Iran, African debutants Angola, plus CONCACAF heavyweights Mexico.
The matches
Serbia and Montenegro – Netherlands, 15:00 (CET), Leipzig, Group C
Both these sides were absent from Korea/Japan 2002 but topped their qualifying groups without suffering a single defeat this time around. In what is the most open group in the tournament, this match will be notable for the contrast of styles provided by solid Serbian defending and sparkling Dutch attacking play.
The duel
Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooij will have an extra incentive to outshine his opposite number, the Serb Mateja Kezman, who replaced him up front at PSV Eindhoven. When the current Manchester United forward was struck down with serious injury, Kezman went on to fire 105 goals in four seasons and take Van Nistelrooij’s place in the hearts of the PSV fans.
